The ancient city of Delphi is still known today for its oracle – originally it was called PYTHO. In the music theatre series of the same name, the retro-futuristic ensemble gamut inc develops staged concerts and music theatre situations in Theater im Delphi Berlin in cooperation with guest artists. This historically charged venue serves as a source of inspiration for PYTHO: its architecture, its spatial sound, its history as well as its functionality are reflected in the forms and contents of the sketchy productions.

LAZY SUSAN – the fifths edition of gamut inc’s PYTHO music theater series – comes as a staged concert for music machines such as automated accordion, automated percussion, gongs or glockenspiels and computer controlled light. This evening is all about circuits and loops. Repetitive structures and pulsating lights transform the theatre into a larger-than-life musical theatre machine. The title LAZY SUSAN derives from the rotating table tops in mainly Asian restaurants on which food can be moved.
Under diorama-like image sequences, the slowly developing music oscillates between noise-based textures, harmonic fields and rhythmic repetitions. In doing so, gamut inc draw on Risset rhythms and algorithmic processes from their most recent album SUM TO INFINITY. Between these levels, progressions are constructed in such a way that a perpetuum-mobile-like, ever-evolving continuum is created that triggers ever new cycles. Eternity can be seen as the last and longest cycle.

PI MINUS ONE is the fourth edition of gamut inc’s PYTHO music theater series, in which the ensemble explores new music theater formats at the Theater at the Delphi Berlin. The 90s thriller π by Darren Aronofsky serves as the basis for PI MINUS ONE: in it, Max, a brilliant young mathematician falls prey to his fascination with the irrational and infinite number π. This increasingly becomes an obsession for him, and pulls him deeper and deeper into a maelstrom of research mania, shady encounters and hallucinations.
MINUS ONE is the term used to describe recordings of musical pieces that are recorded without a melody voice, so that it can be added by instrumentalists.
PI MINUS ONE takes up this idea while alluding to the history of the theater at the Delphi as a silent movie theater: The π film is shown without a soundtrack with subtitles, accompanied by an automatic piano, commented on by the two actors Jordan and Friedrich, who were passed over in the audition for the film. They all too often abandon their actual role – to comment on what is happening in the film and to give background information on the production process. They digress into the private or deviant. They try their hand at interpretations of π, personified by voices of famous theorists and filmmakers. Werner Herzog, Slavoj Žižek or David Lynch speak through them. At some point during the evening, they themselves succumb to the power of π and the boundaries become increasingly blurred.

Inspiriert vom „intelligenten Ozean“ in Stanisław Lems Solaris, macht sich dieser Abend die mehrgeschossige Architektur des Theater im Delphi zunutze. Die drei Blasinstrumente kommunizieren durch ein morphendes Nebelmeer miteinander von drei Leuchttürmen heraus. Die mikrotonale Musik von Zinc & Copper und die intensive Inszenierung entwickeln dabei eine immersive Sogwirkung.

Die zur Eröffnungszeit des Stummfilmkinos Delphi in den 20er Jahren genutzte historische Tonaufnahmetechnik dient als formgebende Inspirationsquelle für diesen Abend. Bei den Schallplattenaufnahmen dieser Zeit kannte man keine Mischpulte wie sie heute üblich sind. Die Aufnahmen wurden meist mit nur einem Mikrofon realisiert, und die Lautstärkemischung durch eine räumliche Anordnung der Spieler erreicht: je näher ein Musiker am Mikrofon stand, desto lauter war er in der Aufnahme präsent – und umgekehrt. His Master ́s Voice greift die Idee auf, räumliche Distanz mit Lautstärke zu verknüpfen. gamut inc entwickelt gemeinsam mit Ruben Reniers und den vier Sängerinnen des Ensemble O eine Raum-Klang Choreographie. Der Titel bezieht sich auf das gleichnamige historische Plattenlabel, dessen weltweit bekanntes Logo den Hund Nipper beim Lauschen eines Edison-Phonographen abbildet.

Ausgehend von der essentiellen Maschine im ehemaligen Stummfilmkino Delphi – dem Filmprojektor – entsteht ein Abend, bei dem die Bilder erneut laufen lernen. Eine überlebensgrosse Maschine aus digital automatisierten Kodak Carousel Dia-Projektoren wird im Saal installiert, die zu einem Apparat angeordnet werden, der auch Assoziationen an die von Brion Gysin and William S. Burroughs entwickelte Dreammachine weckt. gamut inc und Michael Vorfeld entwickeln dazu gemeinsam einen hypnotischen Soundtrack
